Integrative Perspectives on Present-day Mantle Structure

Session ID#: 121421

Session Description:
The present-day structure of Earth’s mantle — in terms of seismic velocity, density, conductivity, rheology, and other properties — is a crucial constraint for understanding Earth’s evolution and dynamics. Recent breakthroughs in joint modelling/inversion of geophysical fields, petrology, transport phenomena and mineral physics allow the mantle community to integrate different techniques in a consistent manner.

In this session we welcome contributions that integrate multiple methodologies/datasets to address the nature and evolution of the Earth’s mantle and/or its interactions with the core and crust. Topics covered by this session include: (1) innovative inversion of multiple data sets, especially Bayesian or machine learning approaches (2) trade-offs and resolution limits (3) petrological/geochemical/transport modelling of mantle properties, and (4) convection simulations and their relation to present-day structure.

Contributions from all disciplines are welcomed, including seismology, potential fields, petrology, and geodynamics, to promote the cross-disciplinary exchange needed to advance our understanding of the Earth’s mantle.
