Interaction between waves and energetic electrons in space plasmas

Session ID#: 122515

Session Description:
The interaction between waves and energetic electrons is an important process that occurs throughout our Sun-Earth system, from the magnetosphere to the solar wind. For example, energetic electrons from the sun are thought to be responsible for type II and type III solar radio bursts observed by spacecraft and ground-based observatories. In the magnetosphere, energetic electrons can excite whistler-mode chorus waves and electron cyclotron harmonic waves; these waves in turn can effectively precipitate the electrons. And whistlers in the solar wind can interact with strahl electrons, broadening the strahl beam. This session aims to bring together researchers working on problems in these and other regions of space in order to advance the fundamental physics of wave interaction with and generation by energetic electrons. Submissions will explore the physics and implications of these interactions from observations, theory, simulations, and/or laboratory experiments.
