An analysis of bilateral research collaborations: Japan-US collaboration and Japan-Sweden collaboration

Session ID#: 122876

Session Description:
This session examines and compares international research collaborations in the two bilateral cases (Japan-US / Japan-Sweden). To analyze international research collaborations in the two bilateral cases, the primary research question is defined as: Which research fields (academic disciplines) are commonly and distinctively promoted through international research collaborations in the two bilateral collaboration cases (Japan-US / Japan-Sweden)?

The research data are collected from publicly available sources. This study applies the qualitative comparative analysis to compare and analyze research collaborations through the four frameworks: 1) academic discipline, 2) institutional characteristics of the affiliated primary investigator, 3) amount of fund, and 4) number of research collaborators.

The study results would also be utilized to build strong foundations for geoscientists, research support professionals, institutional policy makers, and institutional leaders to understand potential opportunities to find university consortiums and other collaboration opportunities at the institutional, national, and international level.
