Atmospheric Research Supported by Uncrewed Systems

Session ID#: 156505

Session Description:
Uncrewed Systems (UxS) are significantly expanding observational capabilities in atmospheric and related sciences. This expansion is enabled by the increased deployment of uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) and tethered balloon/kite systems (TBS). Rapid adaptation of these platforms and the advancement of miniaturized instruments have resulted in ever-increasing amounts of data supporting atmospheric sciences in various environmental regimes, addressing critical science questions, and bridging the atmosphere to other research areas, including hydrology, volcanology and geochemistry. This session invites abstracts discussing scientific contributions in atmospheric sciences using various UxS platforms. The topics could include presentations on the development of new UxS platforms and instrumentation, recent measurement efforts leveraging UxS systems, use of UxS to enhance the weather and climate prediction networks, data analysis and synthesis from past field campaigns, and other scientific interpretation of UxS-based datasets to improve process understanding, numerical model prediction, data assimilation and parameterization development.
