Fractures & Fracturing: Validation data sets and computational challenges

Session ID#: 156707

Session Description:
This session focuses on the measurement and simulation of fracture formation and propagation in geomaterials and the subsurface, including both the brittle and ductile regimes. Few computational approaches for simulating damage and fracturing have been verified against readily available experimental data or have been validated via blind predictions of data sets ahead of data acquisition (e.g.: for experiment design). There is a need to highlight the availability of data sets suitable for validation, as well as prior studies demonstrating the value of direct comparison between model and data. This session will present: (1) experimental and field data related to damage evolution and fracturing (acoustic emission, micro-seismicity, displacements, fluid pressure, flow, geochemical signatures); (2) comparison of computational models and experimental/borehole/field data that highlight model strengths and weaknesses; and (3) results from participants in a damage mechanics computational challenge on damage evolution in brittle-ductile materials.
