Air Quality in Africa: observations, emissions and modeling

Session ID#: 156889

Session Description:
Many regions in Africa have high concentrations of atmospheric pollutants and particulate matter, related to both anthropogenic activities and natural sources such as desert dust, biogenic emissions from the vegetation, as well as biomass burning emissions. Therefore, air pollution is becoming a serious environmental and public health problem in Africa, which can be mitigated by the implementation of adequate emission regulations policies. However, the definition and implementation of such policies requires adequate monitoring networks to better quantify the current spatio-temporal patterns of pollutants and greenhouse gases and an improved characterization of sectoral emissions sources, natural fluxes and their chemical and physical evolution in the atmosphere.

In this session, emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases, surface in-situ measurements, satellite retrievals, field campaigns, model simulations as well as strategies to monitor and understand atmospheric composition in Africa and its impacts will be discussed. We encourage abstracts submissions about observational datasets, surface emissions, physical and chemical processes, modeling and attribution and impacts studies as well as integrative assessments in Africa.
