Advancing Land Surface Models for Hydrological and Environmental Applications
Advancing Land Surface Models for Hydrological and Environmental Applications
Session ID#: 157024
Session Description:
Land surface modeling has become an important means for obtaining hydrological and environmental data. But estimates of land surface models are subject to large uncertainties due to complex model physics which are often uncalibrated and may be scale dependent. Therefore, improving land surface models require both better representation of near-surface processes and effective use of observations at different scales to constrain model estimates. This session will highlight the latest developments and achievements for modeling land surface processes. We encourage contributions in: (1) model developments and improvements that address pressing issues facing hydrology and earth science communities; (2) use of observations of different sources and types for improving simulation results through traditional and innovative techniques including data assimilation, machine learning and big data analytics, (3) diagnosis and analysis that provide insights on model performance and directions for future model improvement; and (4) development of meteorological forcing and other datasets for land surface modeling.
