First Results from the DART Kinetic Impact onto Dimorphos and LICIACube Observations
First Results from the DART Kinetic Impact onto Dimorphos and LICIACube Observations
Session ID#: 157186
Session Description:
The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) will perform the first test of asteroid deflection by kinetic impact for planetary defense. DART will impact Dimorphos, the secondary of the [65803] Didymos binary asteroid, on September 26, 2022 in order to change the moonâs orbit. The Light Italian Cubesat for Imaging of Asteroids (LICIACube) will perform a flyby of the Didymos system a few minutes after the DART impact. First results will be presented i) on the amount of deflection accomplished by the kinetic impact, obtained using ground-based telescopic observations to measure the orbital period change, DART approach imaging to characterize Dimorphos and the impact site, and imaging of the impact ejecta plume obtained by LICIACube, ii) on modeling and simulations of the DART impact, along with laboratory impact experiments, and iii) on ground-based imaging and spectroscopic observations of Didymos before and after the DART impact to characterize the target and the long term evolution of ejecta.
