From Apollo to Artemis: A perspective on the 50th anniversary of Apollo 17 and what is to come regarding our Moon
Session ID#: 162994
Session Description:
Apollo 17 lunar surface operations took place between December 11 and 14, 1972. On the 50th anniversary of the final Apollo mission to the Moon, this session will focus on the expansion of our understanding of the Moon as reflected in remote observations, sample analysis, and human and robotic exploration. With the upcoming completion of the New Views of the Moon 2 initiative, we reflect on the knowledge gained of the Moon, Earth-Moon system, and the Solar System over the previous 5 decades and how these inform and enable future exploration of the Moon through the Artemis Program. This session will also focus on upcoming robotic exploration of the lunar surface as well as the return of humans to the lunar surface with Artemis. Our past and present knowledge guide future exploration and scientific understanding of our nearest neighbor and highlight the value of our Moon.
