PFAS Multi-media Measurements, Methods, and Systems-level Fate and Transport
PFAS Multi-media Measurements, Methods, and Systems-level Fate and Transport
Session ID#: 157279
Session Description:
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are used in a wide array of consumer and industrial products, and have been found in air, soil, water, and biota. Nearly all humans worldwide have been exposed to these ubiquitous contaminants. Continued exposure above specific levels to certain PFAS may lead to adverse health effects. Since 1999, concerns about possible human and ecological risks have driven changes in PFAS product chemistry. While an understanding of the occurrence, fate and transport, and exposure is rapidly evolving, there is a substantial need for additional information on these chemicals, including:
Fate and Transport that Contribute to Exposure: Measurement and/or modeled data for PFAS sources, fate and transport in multi-media for understanding its life cycle in the total environment. Measurements and modeling aspects include but not limited to impacts of clouds on chemical degradation of PFAS compounds and associated wet deposition; hydrology effects on degradation in aquatic environments; biogeochemical reactions of PFAS in the soil, are important topics among other science aspects.
