MR010
Physics of Fluids in Unconventional Reservoir Rocks

Session ID#: 157378

Session Description:
Tight and ultra-tight oil/gas reservoirs are being explored and produced not only in North America but also elsewhere all around the world. Recently, shales and tight-gas sandstones became one of the major contributors to energy supplies, and thus investigating flow and transport in such reservoirs has been the active subject of research in the past decade. However, we are still far from fully understanding mechanisms and factors contributing to transport at various scales from pore to reservoir. The complexity of fluid flow in shales is mainly due to their multi-scale structures composed of nano- and micro-scale pores as well as natural microfractures and artificially induced fractures. Understanding factors and mechanisms contributing to transport in unconventional reservoir rocks has numerous practical applications, particularly in oil/gas exploration and production.

In this session, we aim to provide an opportunity for recent developments and applications of unconventional techniques to shales and mudrocks. The potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  1. Novel theoretical and computational developments as applied to ultra-tight rocks
  2. Digital rock physics
  3. Single- and multi-phase flow
  4. Decline curve analysis
  5. Non-Darcy flow
  6. Hydraulic fracturing and its applications to unconventional reservoirs
  7. Upscaling fluid flow in shales
  8. Effects of pore structure and connectivity on transport
  9. Oil/gas recovery in unconventional reservoirs
  10. Multiscale and multiresolution modeling of shales
  11. Stress- and scale-dependences of petrophysical quantities
  12. Measurement of flow parameters
  13. Fractal-based approaches to unconventional reservoirs
  14. Multi-physical methods
