Climate Impacts of Black Carbon Containing Particles: The Role of Mixing State

Session ID#: 157637

Session Description:
Black carbon is a strong absorber of incoming solar radiation. The mixing state of black carbon (i.e., whether it is co-mixed with other types of aerosols) strongly affects its climate impact by affecting its absorption efficiency, single-scatter albedo, and atmospheric lifetime. However, the atmospheric evolution of black carbon mixing state, what it mixes with (e.g., sulfate, organic aerosol, etc.), and the effects of that mixing on black carbon properties is not well understood.

When internally-mixed, black carbon experiences morphological changes, may absorb and scatter light more strongly, and becomes more hygroscopic than uncoated particles. Independently, these properties would be expected to have opposing effects on the radiative forcing of black carbon containing particles, but the net impact has not been well quantified. Different black carbon sources and formation conditions complicate process level understanding. Representation of black carbon in climate models is highly simplified.

This session invites presentations on advances in the understanding of the climate impacts of black carbon from measurements and models perspectives. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: (a) modeling, laboratory, and observational studies of processes affecting black carbon mixing state; (b) how aerosol properties (e.g., refractive index, morphology) vary due to mixing state; and (c) efforts to improve the representation of black carbon’s radiative properties in climate models.
