Lab-Scale Seismology: Ultrasonic Characterization in Rock Mechanics

Session ID#: 157641

Session Description:
Ultrasonic characterization has become an integrated part of rock mechanics laboratory settings, to probe and infer the properties of rocks, granular media and geomaterials in general. Such experiments are typically conducted in an active fashion with transmitters and receivers, or in a passive Acoustic Emission (AE) mode. Faster data acquisition systems with multi-sensor configuration are providing new opportunities for refined observations, for instance through imaging procedures or machine learning approaches. Despite these improvements, interpreting the data in light of the numerous physical mechanisms taking place remains a challenge. Furthermore, the question remains as to how scalable the ultrasonic observations are and whether they can explain the processes at field-scale. In this session, we invite novel contributions from a broad range of applications (earthquake physics, geothermal or oil/gas energy, volcanology, landslides, and others) that tackles some of the challenges aforementioned using experimental, numerical and/or theoretical approaches.
