Impacts of Global Change on Mountain Social-Ecological Systems: Toward Sustainable Mountain Development

Session ID#: 158230

Session Description:
The UN has designated 2022 as the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development. Mountainous regions are critical providers of diverse of ecosystem services, including freshwater in arid regions. However, mountains are often overlooked. For example, the impacts of climate change on mountains were systematically addressed in the IPCC’s Second Assessment Report (WG II, Chapter 5) in 1996 and only then again in Cross-Chapter 5 of the AR6 WGII’s report released earlier this year. Here we welcome presentations considering the various aspects pertaining to humans living in and relying on mountains now and into the future, including observed impacts of global change in mountains, risks in mountain landscapes arising disease, invasive species, natural hazards, and water supply under projected climates, impacts of change on mountain livelihoods from agropastoralism to recreation and tourism, and much more.
