Biogeochemical and Hydrodynamical Processes in Biofilms and Porous Media
Session ID#: 158785
Session Description:
The experimental characterization and modeling of biogeochemical processes within porous media have far-reaching implications in soil ecology, bioremediation, oil recovery, and hydrology. It is well known that bacteria and biofilms are ubiquitous within porous materials, and their dynamics can impact flow fields, reactive solute transport, and material properties of porous media. Efficient subsurface applications (e.g., biomineralization processes used in soil strengthening, biofilm barriers for contaminant remediation, among others) require an in-depth understanding of microbial behavior and its impact on permeability, wettability, and reactive transport. The inherent complexity of these coupled multiscale systems calls for the development of novel experimental and modeling techniques.
We broadly invite submissions that present new theoretical, experimental, and computational advances in fully or partially saturated conditions involving the study of biofilm hydrodynamics, clogging, biomineralization, reactive transport, bacterial behavior, and coupling across processes/scales. Relevant research techniques include, but are not limited to, microfluidics, advanced imaging technologies, and direct numerical simulations.
