Biogeochemical, Hydrological, and Anthropogenic Perturbations Driving Urban Critical Zone Processes
Session ID#: 161888
Session Description:
Critical zone (CZ) processes in urban watersheds often occur at high rates compared to processes in other land use types, e.g., high peak discharges during storm events, large fluxes of dissolved constituents (nutrients, salts, or metals), rapid denitrification, and enhanced sediment erosion and transport. However, CZ approaches are not commonly used to investigate processes in urban settings as compared to forested or agricultural. We solicit presentations that use CZ approaches to elucidate process dynamics in urban watersheds. We welcome studies that use a wide range of methods, including high-frequency data, synoptic sampling, reactive transport modeling, isotopic methods, geophysics to determine subsurface characteristics, and cross-site comparisons to evaluate fluxes of anthropogenic chemicals and their impact on CZ processes in urban environments.
