Unusual Subduction Processes

Session ID#: 158999

Session Description:
Subduction drives plate tectonics, releases 90% of global seismic moment, governs the largest element recycling system, and shapes the Earth’s surface. Despite progress in our understanding of subduction zones, important questions remain regarding subduction dynamics, especially in atypical subduction environments (e.g., complex slab geometries, interactions with the overriding plate, variable properties of the incoming subducting plate, and subducting-overriding plate memory). Further progress requires integrating observations from geochemistry, geophysics, field geology, and geodynamic modelling, as well as expanding the range of subduction zone investigations to include atypical examples. Unusual slab morphologies and processes such as slab tearing, lithospheric delamination, STEP fault propagation and anomalous arc volcanism all highlight aspects of unusual subduction dynamics. In this session, we invite contributions from all disciplines, including geodynamics, geophysics, geochemistry, field geology, and mineral physics in a common effort to advance the understanding of subduction processes and dynamics.
