Data-Driven Research in Geochemistry: Status Quo and Future Possibilities
Session ID#: 159073
Session Description:
Geochemistry is fundamental for understanding Earth system processes, with numerous applications in environment, resources, geohealth, oceans, and agriculture research. The increasing rate of data generation is complemented by growing cyberinfrastructure, enabling new capabilities in accessing, processing, and modeling large datasets. These recent developments showcase the immense potential of data-driven research in geochemistry to enhance our understanding of Earth system processes, whilst affirming a growing need for globally standardized geochemical data.
This session will explore the possibilities and requirements for data-driven approaches to challenges in geochemistry. We seek contributions from 1) all aspects of geochemical research (including atmospheric, hydrological, sedimentary, mineralogical, and petrology) where large datasets are handled by statistical, graphical analysis, and/or machine learning/AI techniques; and 2) providers/developers of data systems and infrastructures. We aim to showcase existing solutions and best practices that enable geochemistry data to be shared, integrated, and repurposed to meet emerging scientific challenges.
