Near surface geophysics in a changing climate
Session ID#: 159107
Session Description:
Near surface geophysics has an important role to play in understanding and mitigating the impacts of the climate crisis. Locating critical minerals, monitoring geologic storage of CO2, managing water resources, and characterizing changes in permafrost are all examples where advances in near surface geophysics can provide insights. The next significant advancements to address these problems will undoubtedly involve methodological improvements in inversions and machine learning to process and interpret a large volume of complex geophysical data. Importantly, these advances will likely require a more interdisciplinary approach to combine data from potential fields, electromagnetics, nuclear magnetic resonance, and seismic, with other sources such as remote sensing data and geology. Our aim is to spark conversations and new collaborations. We invite submissions from anyone interested in connections between near surface geophysics and our changing climate.
