Near-surface geophysics for vadose zone and soil processes

Session ID#: 160158

Session Description:
The vadose zone (VZ) spans from the surface to the depth of the groundwater table of the first unconfined aquifer; thus, it may extend from centimeters to meters. It can serve as reservoir providing water to crops and the atmosphere, recharge the aquifer and can act as filter for contaminants. Accordingly, understanding textural properties and composition of materials in the VZ is critical for the understanding of a variety of processes such an infiltration-runoff generation, water uptake, water availability, root-soil interactions, carbon storage, transport of nutrients or contaminants transport and degradation. The development of geophysical measuring and modeling techniques over the last decades has provided us with a wide range of methods to address these processes and gain patterns at different spatial and temporal scales in soils and the VZ. We invite contributions to this session that use geophysics to address questions about hydrologic processes in the VZ, and their potential coupling with biological, geochemical and microbial processes. We encourage contributions in all relevant subsurface processes from optimized farming to hydrogeological understanding in contaminated sites or wetlands. We also look for methodological contributions presenting the reinterpretation of existing data sets, novel processing and inversion methods, innovative modeling approaches, as well as case studies that provide a new insight into the interpretation and use of geophysical data for the modelling of processes in the soil and VZ across scales are welcome.
