Modeling Earth Surface Processes Using Community Surface-Dynamics Software

Session ID#: 159344

Session Description:
Numerical surface process models are fundamental for understanding relationships among different Earth systems across a wide range of timescales. This includes sediment connectivity from source to sink, feedbacks between surficial and deep Earth processes, and geomorphic responses to climatic, tectonic, and anthropogenic forcings. However, building new models is time-consuming and hinders standardization between modeling systems. Community surface-dynamics software resolves these issues by standardizing model components, including grid structures, numerical process representations, and user interfaces. Importantly, it increases the accessibility of models dealing with landscape evolution, coastal processes, permafrost dynamics, feedbacks between sociodynamics and physical processes, etc., allowing more scientists to incorporate models into their research and helping to educate the next generation of users. This session welcomes presentations that use community surface-dynamics software (such as Landlab, Delft3D, MODFLOW, Pymt, etc.) to address scientific questions concerning surface processes or contribute novel software developments advancing the capabilities of earth surface process modeling.
