Linking nearshore and onshore sediment transport processes and geomorphic responses: Insights from field, laboratory, and modeling studies
Session ID#: 161046
Session Description:
Beaches, dunes, cliffs, and wetlands are shaped by a wide range of physical drivers such as water level fluctuations, waves, and human influence. Specific impacts of these drivers on coastal landscapes are controlled by the geologic and geomorphic setting, resulting in variations in onshore morphology and nearshore bathymetry. Variations in nearshore bathymetry and onshore morphology ultimately dictate how hydrodynamic processes proceed across both short and long-time scales (e.g., coastal response to storm events vs. sea-level rise). Predictive coastal evolution models must therefore consider linkages between nearshore and onshore processes and field observations can help to inform these processes. This session brings together researchers conducting both observational and modeling studies that link the continuum of nearshore and onshore coastal processes. Submissions are particularly encouraged from studies in regions or environments that to-date have received minimal research attention, as well as research exploring understudied components of these systems to advance predictive capabilities.
