Elucidating the Dynamics of Complex Basaltic Explosive Eruptions: Lessons from 2018–2022

Session ID#: 160182

Session Description:
The last five years have seen an exceptional diversity in explosive and effusive activity in an array of basaltic eruptions, including Kīlauea (Hawaii), Etna (Sicily), Fagradalsfjall (western Iceland) and Cumbre Vieja (La Palma), captured by high-resolution and/or high-speed cameras and geophysics. These approaches permit exceptionally fine temporal and spatial resolution of activity on scales of seconds and meters. Abrupt shifts and gradual transitions in style and intensity occurred, and, often, adjacent fissure-hosted vents displayed contrasting activity on length scales as short as tens of meters. The events are challenging our conventional definitions of eruptive styles (e.g., outgassing, spattering, Strombolian, fountaining).

These eruptions created constant issues for management agencies because of high accessibility for visitors and the need to balance strong popular interest in the eruptions against the issues of public safety. Constraining and anticipating rapid shifts in eruption style and intensity is essential for the safe management of the millions of tourists each year at these, and similar volcanoes.

We look for oral and poster contributions that document and interpret explosive activity in very recent basaltic eruptions, and the controls on this range of eruptive behavior.
