Implementing Natural- and Nature-based Features: The Nexus of Flood Protection & Biodiversity
Session ID#: 161288
Session Description:
We invite presentations of current research, engineering development, and implementation of natural and nature-based features (NNBF) in inland and coastal regions. A particular focus of this session is on design and implementation frameworks that address flood protection, biodiversity enhancement, lifecycle analysis, and monitoring. Nature-based features include wetlands, reefs, beaches and dunes, barrier islands, floodplain re-connection, rain gardens, permeable pavements, etc. Current engineering design practices regarding nature-based features at large scales are lacking, so NNBF implementation is not yet mainstream. The objectives of this session are to 1) highlight work on NNBF research and design that encompasses multiple objectives and benefits, 2) discuss the necessary movement from R&D to implementation, 3) propose lifecycle and monitoring analysis of NNBFs, and 4) identify barriers to implementation.
