Human-induced Factors and Effects on Natural Hazards

Session ID#: 161866

Session Description:
Anthropogenic activities, such as land cover and land-use changes, greenhouse gas emissions, and domestic-international conflict, are inducing hazards through modifications of natural processes in the Earth's system and increasing human exposure and vulnerability to such hazards. Examples of human-made or human-induced hazards include pollution, hazardous material spills, chemical or biological attacks, nuclear blast, radioactivity, drilling, groundwater contamination, or drought and are often triggered by technological or industrial accidents and terrorism or war. The hazards are often coupled with natural hazards and cause cascading effects crossing over spatiotemporal scales, and its impacts are further exacerbated under Earth's changing climate. This session will discuss mechanisms of human-environment coupling in the context of natural hazards, the impact of human-triggered hazardous natural conditions over transboundary dimensions, and prevention, preparedness, and response to mitigate such challenges.
