Advances in Modeling the Effects on Land Surface Characteristics due to Land Use/Land Cover Changes
Advances in Modeling the Effects on Land Surface Characteristics due to Land Use/Land Cover Changes
Session ID#: 161299
Session Description:
Changes in land surface characteristics, such as land use/land cover (LULC) and properties altered by LULC changes: vegetation cover/type, dust, waterbody, soil properties, and urbanization, have profound effects on carbon, energy, hydrologic, biogeophysical, and biogeochemical processes, yet there are still uncertainties in those components, and some components remain missing in the land surface models. This session focuses on advancing the knowledge and discussing the challenges and limitations in characterizing LULC changes and the changes in land surface properties as the results of LULC changes and the consequences across varying scales. We welcome contributions using varying techniques, such as in-situ/satellite observations, modeling, machine learning, etc. on representations of LULC changes and processes in climate models and the LULC change impacts on carbon emissions, vegetation dynamics, wetlands, fire, soil degradation, urbanization, and quantifying the effects on climate, water or nutrient cycles, or the interactions across the atmosphere, surface, and groundwater systems.
