OS025
Transport, Evolution, Mixing and Decay of Coherent Oceanic Eddies.
Session ID#: 161394
Session Description:
Mesoscale and submesoscale coherent eddies can efficiently transport oceanic tracers (e.g. PV, heat, salt, plankton, nutrients, microplastics etc.) far away from their formation sites. Understanding the processes controlling their coherence, transport, mixing properties, evolution and decay, is crucial to understand their impacts on the redistribution of watermass properties, as well as a number of biological implications (fertilization of oligotrophic gyres, fish and larvae aggregations, chlorophyll patchiness etc.). Understanding the eddy-induced transport and mixing is also key to the parameterization of subgrid-scale effects in modern eddy-permitting coupled climate models.
This session welcomes observational, numerical and theoretical contributions, related to the understanding of the many physical processes controlling the evolution of coherent mesoscale and submesoscale eddies, and their role in tracer transport and mixing.
