Mesoscale and submesoscale ocean-atmosphere interactionsand influence on Earth’s climate

Session ID#: 161398

Session Description:
This session seeks contributions investigating ocean-atmosphere interactions mediated by oceanic mesoscale and submesoscale variability and its influences on Earth’s climate system. Observational and high-resolution climate modeling studies have identified a fundamental regime of ocean-atmosphere coupling influenced by spatial variability of sea surface temperature (SST) and ocean surface currents and waves on scales between 1 and 1000km. These studies demonstrate that the ocean eddy/front-forced variability of surface heat and momentum fluxes drives a response in the local atmospheric and oceanic boundary layers and influences the downstream development of synoptic-scale weather systems and precipitation. Significant coupled feedbacks onto the ocean affect the gyre-scale circulation, ocean eddies, and air-sea gas exchange. The surprising impacts on the large-scale atmosphere-ocean environment by coupled interactions between SSTs, currents, waves, and surface fluxes suggest a critical new path forward for improving our understanding of Earth’s climate system.

This session will focus on recent progress in this domain and invites contributions including

  • process-oriented investigations of the physical mechanisms of the coupling using observations or models;
  • advancements in modeling the coupled ocean-atmosphere system to explore the impacts of this coupling on Earth’s climate and climate change and to improve predictability over a range of timescales;
  • capabilities and potential enhancements of satellite and in situ observing systems for observing key variables involved in this coupling; and
  • investigations of non-local influences on the atmosphere and ocean mediated by this coupling.
