The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) Mission: A New Satellite for Earth’s Water Cycle
The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) Mission: A New Satellite for Earth’s Water Cycle
Session ID#: 161605
Session Description:
The new Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission is designed to address scientific questions about the nature of the global water cycle, both terrestrial and oceanic. Using Ka-band radar interferometry and Ku-band altimetry, it will for the first time provide simultaneous, high-resolution global measurements of ocean surface elevations and river and lake water surface elevations and inundation extents. This data will fundamentally transform our ability to understand processes in rivers, lakes, estuaries, and the submesoscale ocean. The science community across oceanography, hydrology, and remote sensing science has worked for more than a decade to develop new methods and scientific understanding that will allow SWOT data to advance our understanding of the movement of water across the globe. For this session, we solicit abstracts that provide an understanding of the recent advances that will enable the SWOT mission to enhance our understanding of Earth’s surface water and oceans.
