Advances in Understanding Water-Energy-Carbon Interactions

Session ID#: 161664

Session Description:
The responses of the terrestrial biosphere to climate variability are controlled by the coupling of terrestrial water, energy, and carbon (W-E-C) cycles. The mechanisms and feedbacks coupling these cycles--such as humidity-soil moisture feedbacks, stomatal regulation of transpiration, latent and sensible heat partitioning, changes in water- and light-use efficiency, and land-cover change--manifest across numerous spatio-temporal scales, challenging our process understanding.

Our session highlights recent advances in characterizing W-E-C coupling pathways, bridging fine-scale mechanistic processes to large-scale patterns, and assessing the sensitivity of W-E-C coupling to future climates. We welcome analysis of both natural and managed landscapes from local to global scales, including observational and experimental analyses from ground-based (eddy-covariance, tree-ring, isotope, sapflow, etc.) and remotely-sensed (hyperspectral, thermal, and microwave-band sensors, solar-induced fluorescence, lidar, etc.) approaches, theoretical analyses, characterization of extreme events and disturbance impacts on land-atmosphere interactions (drought, fire, hurricanes, etc.), and innovation in both offline and coupled Earth System modeling.

  • H - Hydrology
