Novel Paradigms in Terrestrial Ecosystem Modeling
Session ID#: 161794
Session Description:
Mechanistic and functional representations of terrestrial ecosystems are key for understanding, resolving and predicting ecosystem current and future states, including plant biomass, ecohydrological variables, carbon and nutrient cycles, species composition and functional traits. However, canonical paradigms for modeling terrestrial ecosystem and vegetation processes, including source-driven allocation, steady state assumptions, plant functional types, and functional homogeneity are proving increasingly limited for present-day scientific and societal challenges. This session focuses on novel paradigms for modeling vegetation related processes, from individuals to continental scales, with the aim to advance representation of ecosystem function in terrestrial biosphere and Earth system models. Submissions can highlight recent progress on a range of themes including plant optimality theory, sink-driven allocation, functional diversity, nutrient cycling, plant-mycorrhiza interactions, community structure under change, and can focus on their fundamental formulation, experimental validation and/or applications in broader terrestrial ecosystem modeling frameworks.
