Hybrid ROVs – From the Initial Concepts, the Realizations, their Missions and Future potential for Ocean Sciences

Session ID#: 85292

Session Description:
Hybrid ROVs have evolved from the proposal stage to scientific tools allowing the exploration of ocean spaces that require a high level of ship-independent mobility, similar to AUVs but with the intervention capabilities of a full function-tethered ROV. Similarly industrial applications, in particular targeted towards seafloor resident intervention and monitoring systems have seen significant advances towards field deployable systems.

The initial science mission candidates were the deep-sea and the ice-covered regions for horizontal mobility from ship motions independence. This session will provide the opportunity to take stock of the first round of operational experiences with these new tools – from their initial conception to realization with particular look at the specifically enabled scientific achievements and the lessons learned. What are the new operational concepts that these systems enable, which scientific objectives become achievable?
