Biogeochemical Fluxes and Ecological Processes in the Rapidly Changing Coastal Arctic

Session ID#: 85374

Session Description:
The Arctic of today is a new environment, warming faster and changing more rapidly than any other region on the planet; its ice is melting, its permafrost is thawing, its ocean is acidifying. Yet, estimates of the biogeochemical interactions and exchanges between interconnected Arctic systems—the land and the ocean—are poorly constrained.

This session will bring together modelers, observationalists, and stakeholders to exchange information and improve understanding on the current ‘state-of-knowledge’, gaps, and challenges in observing and modeling biogeochemical fluxes and ecological processes in the rapidly changing coastal Arctic. Specific topics may include synthesis of activities across coastal Arctic systems and integration of observations across scales (from the molecular to the ecosystem level) using in-situ and remote sensing observations from different platforms. Submissions are also encouraged on the development and application of coupled land-ocean-ice models to best capture ecosystem biogeochemical and physical control points, ecological shifts, and seasonal transitions along the continuum of Arctic rivers, coastal lagoons, erosion sites, and the ocean. Benefits of this session will include improved coordination of current monitoring and ecosystem modeling efforts in the coastal Arctic, promoting data sharing, and providing updates on planned field activities over the next decade.
