Coastal processes and climate change: Scientific methods and tools to characterize the impacts of changing coastal and nearshore processes
Session ID#: 85388
Session Description:
Coastlines are home to vast natural resources and anthropogenic infrastructure that will be among the most affected by climate change and sea level rise. It is therefore necessary to increase focus on evaluating coastal vulnerability and developing adaptation strategies to protect coastal resources. Anticipated effects of climate change on nearshore regions include, but are not limited to: inundation and flooding, shoreline/dune/cliff erosion, sediment supply changes, loss of natural resources and habitat, and saltwater intrusion. This session welcomes abstracts discussing measurement and modeling studies to characterize climate change effects on nearshore regions, for example:
- Coastal and beach geomorphology
- Nearshore sediment supply and transport
- Coastal biogeochemistry and ecology
- Groundwater daylighting and effect on flood extents
- Sustainable infrastructure mitigation strategies and evaluation.
In particular, we invite studies that discuss novel tools and strategies to characterize geophysical, bioecological, and socio-economic impacts of changing coastal processes with the aim to reduce prediction uncertainties and better inform resource management.
