Remote Sensing of Ice-Ocean Interactions in a Changing Polar Climate

Session ID#: 253507

Session Description:
Ice–ocean interactions play a central role in shaping ocean circulation, ice melt, and marine ecosystems. Processes such as sea ice formation, growth, and melt, iceberg calving and drift, and basal melting of ice shelves contribute to freshwater fluxes, ocean stratification, and nutrient delivery to the upper ocean. Understanding these interactions is essential for improving predictions of regional and global ocean dynamics and thermodynamics. Advances in remote sensing enable continuous, large-scale monitoring of ice–ocean processes using a wide range of platforms and sensors. Optical, thermal, microwave, SAR, and lidar observations from satellites, aircraft, and sensors on autonomous platforms provide critical insights into ice motion, thickness, roughness, meltwater fluxes, and ocean-ice-atmosphere coupling. This session invites contributions using remote sensing to observe and quantify ice–ocean interactions across sea ice, icebergs, and ice shelves in the Arctic and Antarctic. Topics may include sea ice and iceberg tracking, ice shelf calving fronts and basal melt, melt pond formation and evolution, sea ice deformation and lead formation, and links to oceanographic or biological responses. We welcome studies that combine remote sensing with modeling or in situ observations to advance understanding of coupled cryosphere–ocean processes.
