Coastal Sea Ice and Coupled Ocean Processes
Session ID#: 254513
Session Description:
Coastal sea ice, including landfast ice, plays a vital role in shaping Arctic and Antarctic coastal environments. It influences ocean-atmosphere-seafloor interactions, affects coastal ocean circulation and mixing, prevents erosion, and provides critical services to ecosystems and human communities. Its behavior is distinct from that of drifting pack ice, with unique dynamics related to formation, stability, and seasonal evolution. Understanding coastal sea ice processes is essential for interpreting regional climate impacts, biogeochemical exchanges, and coastal hazards.
This session invites contributions that advance knowledge of coastal sea ice and its coupling with oceanic processes. We welcome studies focused on ice formation, persistence, breakup, and feedbacks with coastal currents, mixing, and biogeochemistry. Submissions may use a range of approaches including field measurements, satellite remote sensing, autonomous platforms, modeling, and community-based observing systems. We particularly encourage interdisciplinary work that connects physical, ecological, and human dimensions, or that leverages new technologies and integrated datasets to improve our understanding of these rapidly changing systems in Earth’s polar regions.
