Exploring beyond the tip of the iceberg: understanding coupled iceberg impacts on oceans, glaciers, and climate
Session ID#: 256139
Session Description:
The birth, drift, grounding and decay of icebergs have wide-ranging implications on physical oceanography, marine biogeochemistry, ecology, glaciology and climatology. Iceberg populations are initially determined by calving dynamics, and the presence of icebergs can subsequently feedback on glacier calving by affecting ocean heat transport and modulating the rigidity of proglacial ice mélange. Icebergs also influence sea-ice fields outside the proglacial fjord, where the same sea ice alters iceberg drift trajectories and deterioration processes. The signals of iceberg drift and decay in the sediment record help explain past ice-sheet dynamics. In this session, we are looking for iceberg-related submissions that span any polar region or any oceanic area with significant iceberg impacts. We welcome submissions of any research that interfaces with icebergs – past, present or future. Similarly, we are open to research utilizing a wide range of methodologies, including field-based observations, risk-hazard analyses, numerical modelling of iceberg calving, drift or deterioration, Earth observation via remote sensing and paleo-reconstruction.
