Mutual currents: exploring Art–Science partnerships for ocean engagement

Session Description:
Collaborations between artists and ocean scientists are increasingly common in and out of research infrastructures, both on land and at sea. These collaborations can benefit artistic and scientific researchers alike and provide a unique context to open conversations with a general audience, allowing them to approach ocean science from not only a rational but also an emotional perspective. Yet, art-science collaborations come with a wide range of challenges.
This session invites finished and ongoing projects that present (un-)successful models of inter/transdisciplinary and cross-sectoral partnerships. We are interested in collaborations aimed at public understanding of ocean research through artistic practice, as well as works exploring ethical and emotional connections to ocean science.
We welcome presentations addressing the institutional frameworks that support such collaborations, as well as the professional recognition and mutual value they can generate within both academic and artistic contexts. We aim at bringing together scientists, artists, curators, program leaders, and researchers working at the interface of science and culture to share their methodologies, experiences, and impacts.
To encourage interaction, the session will also include a moderated discussion focused on identifying best practices for sustainable and professionally meaningful ArtScience engagement in marine research.
