Where are they now? Impacts of Transformative At-Sea Experiences for Undergraduates and their Mentors

Session Description:
For a decade now, the STEM Student Experiences Aboard Ships (STEMSEAS) program has provided short-duration (6-10 days), highly immersive oceanographic experiences for undergraduates on transits of the U.S. Academic Fleet and other related research vessels. These brief but powerful cohort-based experiences provided students with STEM workforce skills and academic preparation. The experiences included exposure to oceanographic data and sample collection, marine technology, maritime careers, observations and hands-on activities in how science works, growth in peer and mentor networks, and inspiration for their future careers and/or continued academic journeys.
This session is an opportunity to reflect on ocean-going learning experiences (STEMSEAS and other programs with similar goals) over the past 10 years with the goal of extracting both lessons learned and effective education and workforce development models. To this aim, the session invites presentations from 1) students to share how these experiences shaped their next steps, 2) mentors to highlight how their mentoring experience impacted them, their teaching and their careers and 3) program managers describing how these programs have evolved in response to evaluation data and feedback from participants.
