Sediment Transport in the Nearshore Ocean: Insights from Field, Laboratory, and Numerical Experiments

Session ID#: 256906

Session Description:
Sediment transport and morphodynamics in the nearshore ocean occur over a wide range of time and space scales. Prediction of these processes in this zone is critical to understanding long-term coastal evolution, estimating future hazards, and evaluating novel adaptation strategies. Yet, fundamentally understanding sediment transport processes in this environment has proven challenging due to the complexity of combined wave and current forces, episodic and isolated processes, rapid changes to bed structure, sediment-biology interaction, and lack of instrumentation. Advances have often followed dedicated laboratory and numerical experiments in which processes can be isolated or controlled. This session welcomes abstracts describing field, laboratory, or numerical experiments that focus on advances in nearshore sediment transport, such as 1) fundamental understanding of fluid-sediment dynamics, 2) improved numerical modeling of sediment transport, and 3) improved instrumentation and advances in experimental techniques related to sediment transport. We strongly encourage student and early career participation.
