Integrating Research, Communities, Capacity Building, and Policy in the global south: Examples from Africa and beyond

Session Description:
Africa has a great potential for mCDR, however, there have been few coordinated efforts to guide research, innovation and policy, hindering the advancement, development and deployment of mCDR technologies in the region. In response, a continent-wide roadmap has been initiated to guide research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of mCDR approaches tailored to Africa’s unique ecological, social, and economic contexts. This roadmap offers a model for other regions in the global south As a multistakeholder initiative currently involving 13 African countries, the roadmap brings together research institutions, government agencies, and local communities to chart responsible, equitable mCDR pathways. It addresses five key pillars: governance and policy, science and technology, finance and investment, community engagement and inclusion, and entrepreneurship and workforce development. It has produced thematic work plans, appointed regional working group leads, and initiated a draft African mCDR Roadmap. This session seeks to attract interdisciplinary contributions for mCDR RD&D from Africa and beyond, and to include current research activities, community engagement, innovation and inclusive governance. This session will examine models for Global South engagement in shaping the future of ocean-based carbon removal.
