Hacking the Ocean: Open-Source Technology and Tools to Train the Next Generation of Ocean Scientists

Session Description:
Innovative, accessible tools ranging from DIY sensors and open-source hardware to AI-driven software are transforming ocean science education across classrooms, field stations, and community programs. We invite contributions that showcase how low-cost, user-friendly, and open technologies are enabling hands-on learning, expanding access to underserved communities, and sparking curiosity in the next generation of ocean scientists. From repurposed consumer electronics for data collection to open-source code for data insights to low-barrier platforms for data visualization, these technologies embody the spirit of the maker movement and democratize access to ocean exploration. We are particularly interested in tools that foster experiential learning, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, or support students in engaging with real oceanographic data. Whether your tool supports K-12 learning, undergraduate/graduate research, citizen science, or remote teaching, this session aims to amplify innovations that make ocean science more inclusive, equitable, and engaging.
