Blue humanities and oceanic future: Textual encounters with maritime ecology

Session Description:
Literary representations of the ocean and the coastal regions and spaces range across diverse genres, historical context of aquaculture, reflecting human connection with maritime ecology, maritime economy and coastal infrastructures. As the ocean is increasingly shaped and reshaped by anthropogenic trends and norms-ranging between trade routes, deep mining and deep sea technology and the effects of plastic production, literary insights offer a unique template for understanding the entangled past and the future of oceanic ecology. The conceptual framework of the ocean as a temporal space of history and the future helps in understanding not just the connection between the human and the nonhuman in the context of environmental history but also in imagining the future of oceanic ecology through literature. This session invites papers that explore the intersection of literary engagement, maritime ecology, oceanic history and coastal infrastructures. We welcome interdisciplinary approaches that draw on blue humanities, maritime literature and environmental history to explore how literary texts from vovayges, and sea fiction and epic poetry engage with contemporary trends of blue humanities and oceanic ecology.
