Sound Insights: Advancing Understanding of Mid- to High-Trophic Dynamics through Acoustic Observations

Session ID#: 258515

Session Description:
Over the past decade, both passive and active acoustic sensing have become increasingly important tools for observing the ocean. This growth was fueled by rapid technological advancements that made sensors more compact and cost-effective, supporting novel sensing approaches using existing infrastructures. These advances are significantly expanding the toolset available to the ocean science community.

This session invites contributions that use acoustic techniques at the core of investigations together with complementary approaches, such as optics, genetics, satellite remote sensing, oceanographic modeling, and biogeochemical measurements, to build an integrated and holistic understanding of marine ecosystems. In particular, we emphasize research focusing on the mid- to high-trophic levels, where long-term, persistent observations remain challenging. We welcome research that leverages a wide range of acoustic technologies, such as hydrophones, sonar systems, and undersea cables, deployed from diverse platforms including ships, moorings, autonomous surface and underwater vehicles, and ocean observatories.

We aim for the session to foster interdisciplinary exchange and provide a space for participants to share insights, identify common challenges, and explore avenues for collaboration. Therefore, in addition to highlighting scientific results, we encourage submissions to include discussions on the underlying hardware, software, and/or data technologies that enabled the research.
