Mesoscale and Smaller Processes in the Arctic Ocean: Dynamics, Changes, and Impacts
Session ID#: 259467
Session Description:
The Arctic Ocean is changing rapidly in a warming climate. Previously considered a quiescent environment, growing evidence suggests that rich (sub)mesoscale dynamics and internal waves significantly impact Arctic sea-ice dynamics, stratification, circulation, and biogeochemistry, for example by facilitating upward heat transport from underlying warm waters, modulating air-sea exchange, and redistributing nutrients. Dramatic changes in the Arctic environment, such as shifts in sea ice properties, extent, and timing, and the corresponding increased atmosphere-ocean coupling are expected to alter the balance of small-scale processes and modulate important feedbacks (e.g. the importance of surface and internal waves and the ice-albedo feedback).
Our limited understanding of Arctic (sub)mesoscale dynamics and internal waves stems not only from sparse observations but also from factors associated with the high latitude, such as restricted propagation of the baroclinic tide and small mesoscales. This session welcomes contributions based on theory, modelling, and observational approaches for understanding (sub)mesoscale dynamics, internal waves, and other small-scale physical processes in the Arctic Ocean, including their generation, interactions, role in heat, nutrient, freshwater and energy transfers, their representation in ocean models, and their implications for circulation. Interdisciplinary studies of the atmosphere-sea ice-ocean system, biogeochemical processes, and ecosystems are also encouraged.
