Large-scale changes in the Arctic and Subarctic - Processes and Impacts

Session ID#: 259476

Session Description:
Major changes in Arctic Ocean surface temperature, sea ice, heat and freshwater distribution, and ocean circulation are ongoing and may have regional or global forcing responses, and climatic and economic implications. Phenomena such as Atlantification and Pacification highlight the importance of both regional processes and the connections to the rest of the world’s oceans. These shifts drive profound changes within the Arctic and beyond. Examples include fundamental changes in water-mass transformation and overturning in the Nordic Seas and Arctic Ocean, and in the chemical and biological systems that show long-term trends with impacts for ocean CO2 uptake and marine industries.

We invite contributions that address long-term trends, shifts, and transitions at regional to pan-Arctic scales, with particular focus on the Subarctic-Arctic connection. Interdisciplinary studies of the atmosphere-sea ice-ocean system, chemical processes, and the ecosystem are welcome, as well as studies focusing on individual aspects that contribute to understanding the large-scale picture. As the session is process-oriented, both modelling and observational perspectives are appreciated. Studies that present novel approaches or measurement techniques are strongly encouraged to submit to this session.
