Microbial transformation of organic matter across aquatic gradients: Mechanisms, strategies, and ecosystem impacts

Session ID#: 259484

Session Description:
Organic matter (OM) turnover in aquatic ecosystems, from surface waters to the deep ocean, drives global carbon and nutrient cycles. Microbial communities are central to these transformations, yet our understanding of the relationships among community composition, metabolic function, and the chemical and physical properties of OM remains incomplete. This session explores how microbial processes mediate the fate of OM across environmental gradients, particularly changes in physico-chemical conditions, substrate availability, and community interactions.

We invite studies linking microbial community structure and function to OM composition and turnover across aquatic environments, from local to global scales. We welcome research addressing microbial adaptations to spatial or environmental gradients, including taxon-specific activities, enzyme production and expression, and the roles of niche-separated microbes. Also encouraged are studies exploring how biotic and abiotic interactions influence OM transformation.

We especially seek contributions integrating molecular and biogeochemical approaches, including meta-genomics, -transcriptomics, -proteomics, metabolomics, enzyme assays, rate measurements, as well as chemical and physical OM characterization. Comparative and modeling studies that offer conceptual or predictive frameworks for OM cycling are also welcome. This session aims to foster a mechanistic and integrative understanding of how microbial metabolism shape the fate of OM and regulate biogeochemical cycles in dynamic aquatic systems.
