Circulation, Biogeochemistry, and Coupled Processes in the Indian Ocean: Variability and Vulnerability to Anthropogenic Change
Session ID#: 259883
Session Description:
The Indian Ocean is a dynamically complex and unique ocean basin, shaped by strong monsoonal forcing, distinct geography, and seasonally reversing circulation patterns. These features contribute to pronounced variability on intraseasonal to decadal timescales, with implications for regional weather systems, ocean-atmosphere coupling, and ecological and biogeochemical processes. Despite its central role in the global climate system, the Indian Ocean remains comparatively under-observed and under-studied. Advances continue to uncover unknown oceanic pathways, modes of variability, and feedbacks between circulation, air-sea interaction, and upper-ocean biogeochemistry. Uncertainties persist regarding the drivers of extreme events, the role of physical processes in shaping biogeochemical and ecological variability, and the predictability of coupled ocean-atmosphere dynamics in a changing climate. This session invites contributions that use observations, models, or theory to investigate Indian Ocean variability and its links to monsoons, extreme events, multi-scale mixing, air-sea exchanges of heat and climate-relevant trace gases, and global ocean-atmosphere variability across all time and space scales, including their impacts on ecosystems and coastal communities. We welcome studies on inter-basin exchanges, decadal predictability, and the ecological or biogeochemical consequences of these physical processes. Submissions from researchers involved in international programs and field campaigns like SOLAS, IIOE-2, IndOOS, IODP, and EKAMSAT are encouraged.
