Advanced organic electronic materials can be formed by supramolecular assembly in liquid crystalline and crystalline phases. The rational design of such materials rests on structural data of a systematic set of materials. Various transmission electron microscopic techniques (sample preparation, diffraction, and bright-field, dark-field and lattice imaging) are used here to determine the alignment, structure and defects of these phases.
