In this study, we developed a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model to describe the core-shell structured droplet formation for coaxial electrohydrodynamic atomization (CEHDA) process. As a pre-optimization prior to large-scale production of microparticles, effect of nozzle configuration was investigated by the developed model based on single needle system. Subsequently, a user defined discrete phase model (DPM) was employed to simulate the charged droplet/particle motion during the eletrospraying process. For the large-scale production, multi-nozzle eletrospraying system was designed and studied based on a coupled CFD-DPM model. The interaction and deposition pattern of multi-nozzle electrosprays were investigated. The corresponding structures of the core-shell microparticle in different regions were analysed as well. This computational study can provide detailed knowledge of the CEHDA process and benefit pharmaceutical industries as a sustainable design of this process for core-shell microparticles production in a large scale.
